NATIONAL SECURITY ALERT

The following ALERT has been issued.

                LEVEL YELLOW

 January 9, 2004

Threat level returns to  Level Yellow, signifying an elevated risk of terror attacks according to U.S. Attorney General John Aschcroft.

Returning to the elevated level of risk is only an indication that some of the extra protective measures enacted by government and the private sector may be reduced for the time being.  We emphasize the U.S. and its interests are still at a significant risk of terrorist attack.

Due to ongoing security threats to the country, please review the following core reminders for hazmat workers and companies.  More specific recommendations regarding hazardous materials security practices, driver security measures and other security information are available at our website: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/security

The warning system has five levels, starting with green -- the lowest alert level -- and followed by blue, yellow, orange, and red.  Each code triggers specific actions by federal agencies and state and local governments.  Under an yellow alert, security officials are to focus on critical facilities and vulnerabilities.
